Smart inaugurates 3 IT schools

DIVISION OF LIGAO CITY
Ligao City
TUBURAN, LIGAO CITY-- Campaigning for the
integration of Information Technology on Education,
the Smart Telecommunications company in
cooperation with Philippine Business for Social
Progress, endowed the official smart schools
marker to three selected schools in Region V on
March 13, 2008 at the Bicol Regional Science High
School.
The event dubbed as
Turn-Over and Acceptance
Ceremonies of Smart-Information and
Communication Technology Equipment
, inclusive
of two new computer sets and free internet
connection package from Smart and PBSP, had
three more school recipients namely Catanduanes
National High School, Tabaco North West Central
School, and the school-venue(BRSHS).
Ligao City Mayor Linda P. Gonzalez graced the
occasion by welcoming the guests and expressing
the gratitude of the Local Government to the
program benefactor.
Goals for establishing Smart Schools: Access, Content and Training

According to Darwin Flores, Smart representative, the main target of the program is to
incorporate IT on teaching and learning between students and teachers of a school. Flores also
emphasized that the program includes two projects--smart mentors program, and community
outreach project.
The smart mentors program encompasses training sessions rendered to teachers thru legally
tapping the school's network (computers connected to each other). In turn, each teacher is
expected to transfer the learnings by sharing his or her knowledge to other mentor, even to those
who are not in their respective school.
Furthermore, the second project chiefly raises the concern for unity within a community, specifically
on the issue of climate change. With the project, the Smart and PBSP, as said by Flores, "want to
go global by first going local."

Smart Schools Program Coverage

Established last 2004 as a flagship community project, the Smart Schools program adopted 150
high schools, and on 2007, included 30 elementary schools nationwide in their Junior Program.
In addition, the initiative links the concept of user-generated local communication. Flores cited the
"happy sleep" blog made by a Filipino-American and belongs to the top ten most watched videos in
Youtube. This Fil-Am is now designated as ambassador for tourism by the Philippine government.
Through the project, the Smart and PBSP wants to put emphasis on school website as a platform
for globality dubbed in the Filipino website "Doon Po sa Amin."
